Writing a Book Review
What is a book review?
A book review does not attempt to discuss every single fact included within a work; it attempts to provide an overview of a book to analyze its merits, shortcomings, and the contributions that it makes to its field of study. What can an individual learn by reading this book and is it worth their time to read the book?
Introduction
Summarizes the main issues and/or problems in the book, focusing on 2
-
3 major themes,
issues, problems, or events that will discussed at length within the body of the review
Provides specific explanation of what you intend to focus on within the body of your
review (thesis)
Body
Discusses three major issues, problems, or events focused on within the book
Periodically relates each major issue, problem, or event to how it fits into the larger
picture of the work
Explains who was involved in each issue, problem, or event
Discusses how each problem was resolved, or how was the event concluded
Casually make comments about the quality of the arguments made by the author. Does
the author provide logical conclusions based on the facts presented? Does it appear that
any facts are missing or that the author stretches the facts to make their argument?
Conclusion
What lessons can be learned from reading the book? How could the book be improved?
Did you like the book? Would you recommend it? Why or why not? If the book ties in
with current events, how will readers benefit by reading it?
