Please read Tomas Almaguer, Ch. 2 The True Significance of the Word “White” pp. 45-65 & pp 73-4. The reading is posted here on Moodle.  Focussing on California, it explains the status of Mexicans after the U.S. takes over in 1848.

 

Please answer the following questions:

1.) What's your gut reaction to this reading?
2.) What characteristics of the Mexican population enabled them to have a higher social standing than other racialized groups in the eyes of Euro-Americans after the U.S. takeover? -How did this vary for different classes of Mexicans? -Describe the different classes of Mexicans.  
3.) Describe the political power California Mexicans held (or did not hold) under U.S. power? 
4.)How did European-Americans perceive Mexicans in California according to their class and gender? How was this reflected in the conventions of intermarriage?  
5.) What was the economic and political fate of Mexicans, according to class, after the U.S. came to power?
