essay

Question

A comparison-contrast essay asks you to compare and contrast the features of two similar topics. In this assignment you are asked to compare two different artistic forms or media that cover the same topic: Anne Frank.

Compare the text of The Diary of Anne Frank that you read when visiting the multimedia exhibit: "Anne Frank: An Unfinished Story" to the feature film you just watched. What were the similarities and differences that you found in the text compared to the movie? Use the following list to help guide your writing:

  • Differences and similarities in portrayal of Anne Frank from text to movie
  • Delivery of themes
  • Delivery of text/dialog

Make sure that you use the vocabulary/literary terms you learned in this lesson. It would be most helpful to review those terms before writing your essay!

Hint: You may also want to create a Venn Diagram before you begin.

In addition, review the following helpful hints about writing this type of essay before you attempt your first draft:

  • Beginning: Hook your reader right off the bat! Start with a startling fact or interesting detail. Make sure that the way you hook your reader leads up to a thesis statement, which should define what your essay will examine.
  • Middle: ORGANIZATION! This is one of the most important traits in your rubric this time around, because when you are writing a comparison-contrast essay, it is one of the trickiest things to master. Before you begin writing, decide how you will organize your essay: Will you write about the similarities first and then write about the differences? Or will organize your essay around different components or elements of the story of Anne Frank?
  • End: Bring it all to a complete closure. Reflect on what you have just written here.  *5 paragraph
