We have looked at the possible issues faced by new counselors.  Now we look at characteristics that the secular world believes makes one an effective counselor.  Of course, above all, the over-riding characteristic of an effective counselor will be one who is called by God for this challenging work because it is from Him alone that we receive our gifting and our ability to help others.  However, as one considers this calling, it is valuable to look at these characteristics and see which ones fit and what might be a bit challenging. Read pp. 19-20 of the textbook by Corey.

• Consider the personal characteristics of effective counselors.

• Prepare a 2 page paper addressing the following points:
  • Select and discuss five of the characteristics you consider to be your best strengths and explain why.
  • Select and discuss one of the characteristics you believe may be a challenge for you at this time in your life and explain why.
