Sometimes trauma cuts to the core of one’s personality, making every day “normal” functioning difficult. Think back to Week One and your understanding of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including common symptoms. Expanding from what you have learned thus far, what specific psychological (i.e. patterns of thinking) coping mechanisms are impacted that make it especially difficult for someone who has experienced traumatic events (i.e. witnessing someone die, significant loss) to cope. If resilience can be learned and is impacted by our thinking, how can we encourage better thinking habits when someone has experienced trauma?
- Prepare to discuss barriers to taking positive steps to manage chronic stress and trauma. Ensure the following points are addressed:
- Address how someone with PTSD can become more resilient, both in treating and overcoming PTSD, as well as taking steps to put the trauma behind them.
- What treatment options are available for PTSD?
