What Makes Identical Twins Different? Discussion
No unread replies.No replies.
Identical twins share the same DNA, yet differ as they grow older. WatchThe Epigenetics of Identical Twins. (Links to an external site.)
Read the article "Nature and Nurture (Links to an external site.)" (scroll down below the video) . You can also review "Lick your Rats (Links to an external site.)" to explore how behavior can affect the DNA of offspring!
In no less than 200 words, please describe what you learned about how the structure of DNA affects the function of DNA. Using your textbook, describe the difference between a chromosome and a gene. Discuss how one chromosome (for instance, Chromosome 1) inherited from your mother is similar to the same chromosome inherited from your father. How are they different? Finally, share how this impacts your view of how your DNA vs. your environment affects you.
You must use examples from the video, article, and activity assigned in this discussion. You may also support your post with information you learned about in this module. After you have posted your view, respond to at least one of your classmates' posts. Your post should be a reply to this message- not to a classmate's post. You will not receive credit for the post unless your discussion is a reply to this prompt. Note that BONUS POINTS are available for posting additional thoughtful responses to your classmates' posts.

NOTE: The SLOs for this course are supported by individual CLOs that stated for each chapter covered in this course. The discussions you participate are intended to further support specific learning objectives, as well as to provide you opportunities to ask questions on the material about which you are learning. The SLOs and CLOs that this discussion supports are:
SLO3. Identify the basic requirements of life and the properties of the major molecules needed for life.
- CLO1-4. Describe the relationship between structure and function in organisms using biological examples.
- CLO4-3. Identify the structure and function of the key chemical (functional) groups that affect the function of biological molecules.
SLO7. Identify the principles of inheritance and solve classical genetic problems.
- CLO12-1. Discuss what comprises the cell’s genetic material using the terms chromatin, chromosomes, and sister chromatids and how this genetic material is organized in the dividing vs. non-dividing cell.
- CLO13-2. Describe how homologous chromosomes are similar and how they can differ.
SLO8. Identify the chemical structures, synthesis, and regulation of nucleic acids and proteins.
- CLO1-6. Describe DNA and the difference between chromosomes, chromatin, and genes.
