Assignment Five | City Planning: Attrition of Automobiles
Figure 1*
“US, transportation is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and represents almost half of the personal emissions for households.”1
“69.74% of workers commuting to work in New York drive themselves by car.”2
New York is a city that is very much planned around car use. As evidenced in the above two quotes, individuals living in New York rely heavily on their vehicles to transport themselves around the city. In Chapter Eighteen of Death and Life Of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs observes various ways and means that vehicle attrition can be achieved, and other forms of transportation can be encouraged.
This week’s assignment requires you to assume the role of ‘Attrition Tactician’. Isolate 3 ways to curb vehicle use in New York. For each, provide a photograph, diagram or drawing to illustrate the proposal. Write a sentence or two beside each, to give more detail. I have shown a sample layout on the following page. Give your assignment a title, listed at the top of the page. The images and their descriptions should be left-aligned. Text in sans serif 11pt font, single spaced. Name and student number are to be listed below the lowest image, bottom LH side, also left-aligned.
