TWO: Key Concepts Discussion
Conflict seems inevitable. Whenever two or more people gather there will always be the potential for disagreement. Jandt (2017) claimed that disagreement and conflict are not necessarily bad or wrong things for some positive things can come out of conflict. However, conflict becomes problematic when it escalates to the point when neither party can interact or properly behave toward one another in a civil manner. As a person who is tasked with resolving conflict, you need to understand how and why conflict escalates. Too often, conflict becomes problematic at the breakdown of communication, the struggle for power, and cultural differences. To successfully navigate through conflict, it is important to understand the interrelation of conflict, culture, power, and communication. Often these items will reveal underlying motivations and help you as a negotiator get to the central problem more effectively. Having the ability to discuss these issues with your peers will allow you not only to practice understanding the interrelation of these concepts but it will also allow you to interact with perspectives other than your own in a fruitful and meaningful way.
