A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
Another famous hymn, from the pen of Martin Luther (1483-1546), is one that doesn’t take us long to start humming after hearing the first musical phrase.  We are reminded of the power of music to carry the truth of doctrine into our minds and hearts, and this one is a great example.
Luther jumps right into a juxtaposition of the God who is our fortress, and the enemy with which we do battle.  Notice that he does not question the reality of spiritual forces, the devil and fallen angels.  Not only does Luther assume their existence, but he also reminds the believer of their hate and intent to destroy anything that is associated with God and His purposes.
It is God’s presence with us that protects us daily from the onslaught of attack.  We can be thankful for Christ’s work that saves us from sin, death and the devil!
