Objective: Examines best practices, pertinent legislation, ethical and professional issues associated with case management services. The (ACA) Affordable Care Act of 2010 was enacted to ensure that Americans had access to affordable, quality healthcare. The goal of this healthcare act is to provide the uninsured with healthcare options.

Here are a few of the overarching items that case managers should know about the ACA, also known as “Obamacare.”

• Coverage is guaranteed, regardless of preexisting conditions. • Individual mandate: those without coverage will have to pay the penalty. • Each state will offer health insurance exchanges. • Federal subsidies will be provided to assist low-income individuals and families. • Medicaid will be expanded to include more individuals (some states opted out of this option).
