Objective: determine the jurisdiction of state courts and their hierarchy.

Look at the history of state courts in the U.S. and notice how their jurisdiction is limited. Look at the many different levels of courts within the state systems versus the smaller amounts available at the federal level. Notice how state courts continue to develop as times change including such additions as drug courts. Make sure you understand where the state and federal court jurisdiction overlaps.

• Do some research regarding your home country.
  • Find the different types of state and federal courts that are available to you.
  • Indicate whether the court is a trial court, intermediate appellate court, or the highest federal or state court.
