Looking into the concepts of leadership and management, one can see both similarities and differences. Concerning differences, one might notice that management deals primarily with execution while leadership deals with teaching and training. Although tasks need executing during a normal shift, obtaining the knowledge and skills to accomplish this task correctly are vital. Simply asking employees to execute a task without teaching them the knowledge and skills to accomplish this task is not enough to advance both yourself and the other individual. Both ways are effective but achieving the outcome may look different. In addition, leadership casts vision whereas management promotes knowing how to do most things in a company (The Basics of Leadership, 2021). Vision promotes reason and worth whereas knowing how to do things helps one better understand the movements of the company. Having a vision is more important than knowing how to do everything in my opinion. It is not the responsibility of some to know all the innerworkings of a company. However, vision gives the individual purpose, regardless of their state in the company or ministry. Finally, leadership promotes relationship and management distinguishes between position (The Basics of Leadership, 2021). Investing in a person’s life, by means of being a good leader, can make development increasingly easier. Creating an atmosphere driven off of dos and don’ts keeps the relationship surface level. Developing business-like relationships is largely more effective than relying on rank alone.
Although there are distinct differences between leadership and management, the two complement each other in many ways. First, leadership helps the individual see his or her purpose in their specific function whereas management largely focuses on the “how to” concerning that purpose (The Basics of Leadership, 2021). These two characteristics complement each other well. Knowing how to do something correctly and timely plays right into developing his or her purpose. For instance, if my purpose is to glorify God in all that I do, knowing how to do things most effectively can help me redeem the time (1 Corinthians 10:31; Ephesians 5:15-15, New American Standard Bible). Second, growing in management can lead to becoming a leader. Nelson (2005) adapts a concept explaining that achieving as a manager can lead to creating leadership qualities (pg. 96). Knowing the inner workings of a company or ministry can produce vision casting and development. Instead of these playing hand-in-hand, they work together in a form of hierarchy. There is always a chance to improve in this model. Finally, leadership and management can become biblical in nature. One can accomplish much by adapting certain biblical principles into their learning system. God is both our leader and manager. He gives us a vision and mission and then coaches and manages us through our life. We are to be the same for those that work for us, whether in a company or in a ministry.
