Question

Reagent grade vanadyl sulphate supplied commercially contains sulphuric acid and water as impurities. In an experiment the purity of a sample of vanadyl sulphate was measured using ion exchange chromatography and spectrophotometry.

A column was prepared using 8.24g of Amberlite 120A cation exchange resin in the H+ form, and the column was rinsed thoroughly with distilled water.

0.3825g of the commercial Vanadyl sulphate sample was dissolved in distilled water and made up to 100mls. Its absorbance, measured at 750nm was 0.324. The coefficient of molar absorptivity (extinction coefficient) for pure  VOSO4 at 750 nm is ε . Then 8.0 mls of this solution was added to the ion exchange column and allowed to equilibrate, following which it was washed with distilled water and the eluate titrated with the 0.105M standardised NaOH. The titre was 4.0 mls NaOH.   Determine the composition of the vanadyl sulphate in the form (VOSO4)1.00(H2SO4)x(H2O)y
