As the counseling relationship begins to develop, the counselor should focus on creating a safe situation in which the client feels encouraged to move toward openness. The skill of inviting communication and listening carefully are primary at this point in the process.

• Read pages 113-116 of your SAC text on the strategies to create an environment for change.
• In a 2 page paper, summarize each strategy and how it can be applied to a counseling session.
