Objective: Outline motivational interviewing counseling strategies.

A myth that dominated out-of-date views of addiction treatment was that substance abuse clients were disinterested in treatment, inclined not to change, and only interested in manipulating the system to continue their addictive behaviors. There was a time when people believed that motivation was a character trait seldom found in people with substance abuse problems. Motivational interviewing suggests an entirely different view of motivation.

• Discuss the terms “ambivalence, empathy, collaboration and self-efficacy” as related to Motivational Interviewing.
• Discuss the “MI Spirit” and why it is important when working with clients with substance use issues.
• Discuss the effectiveness of MI using a Christian worldview.
