Checklist

• Is the topic suitable for a comparison/contrast essay?
• Does the thesis clearly state the most important similarity or difference between the subjects?
• Does the essay examine similar features of both subjects?
• Does each paragraph include a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph?
• Does each paragraph include enough details to develop the main point?
• Are the body paragraphs six to eight sentences long?
• Is the essay organized in either the point-by-point or the block method?
• Have transitions between and within paragraphs been used to make connections between the points clearer?
• Have all sources been documented as appropriate?

If your essay is too long, consider changing the thesis statement by narrowing it down. Also think about broadening the topic sentences so they cover two or more related points. Think about whether the characteristics you describe belong together.
