Objective: Identify the criticisms of the concept of codependency.

The goal of this activity is to appreciate that commonly used terms in our society need to be understood, and that opposing views exist. One such term, codependency, is tossed around quite a bit in our society’s vernacular, sometimes used appropriately and others times not. Consider the following question; have you ever known someone “trapped” in a codependent relationship? When considering that question, it forces one to not only need a correct definition of the word codependent, but to also believe that such a phenomenon is a real thing, backed up by sound research. Many in the field of substance abuse have raised concerns about the concept of codependency, and such is the focus of this activity’s goal.

• Write a 1-page journal that focuses on codependency.
• To achieve maximum points for content and analysis, the following elements need to be thoroughly addressed:
  • Reflect on the definition of the term “codependency”.
  • Have you ever known someone to be impacted by this type of relationship?
  • How accurate is/was your thoughts on this concept compared to the literature in the reading?
