Students in this Capstone course come from three areas of study – Psychology, Human Services, and Criminal Justice.  Although there are many overlaps in these disciplines, each focuses on different aspects of people’s lives.  Therefore, it is good to learn from each other about your particular discipline which is what we hope to achieve in the weeks to come.

To help you understand a bit about the three disciplines, here are the definitions for each:

Human services is broadly defined, uniquely approaching the objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations. The Human Services profession is one which promotes improved service delivery systems by addressing not only the quality of direct services, but also by seeking to improve accessibility, accountability, and coordination among professionals and agencies in service delivery (National Organization for Human Services).

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context (Oxford Dictionary).

Criminal Justice is the system of law enforcement that is directly involved in apprehending, prosecuting, defending, sentencing, and punishing those who are suspected or convicted of criminal offences (Oxford Dictionary).
