The read section lists eight tactics given that officers would utilize to profile a drug smuggler that is traveling by commercial airlines. The first profile I chose to discuss is number three on the list. It is traveling by an unusual itinerary, such as a rapid turn-around time. I liked this ones since it was actually United States Supreme Court case that was referenced in the read section. The case was in 1989 amd was United States v. Sokolow. It would be odd for someone to travel from Hawaii to Miami just to spend forty-eight hours and then fly back. Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist stated " While a trip from Honolulu to Miami, standing alone, is not a cause for any sort of suspicion, here there was more: Surely few residents of Honolulu travel from that city for twenty hours to spend forty-eight hours in Miami during the month of July (Levinthal, 2012, p.123)." This makes perfect sense in a profiling situation, but will have nothing to do with what the color of a person's skin is.

The seconds technique I chose to discuss is the one where a passenger makes contradictory statement during questioning. This would obviously be done once the officer has established some type of reasonable suspicion to further investigate and start a questioning process. This technique is used as an interdiction tactic when people are also traveling in an automobile. Fortunately we as law enforcement officers are nit usually dealing withe the most intelligent criminals in the world.

There are eight indicators that would send red flags to law enforcement if a person was smuggling drugs through a plane. The first indicator that would prove suspicious to me would be indicator #5 purchasing airline tickets with cash. Let’s face it, not very many people use cash in today’s society especially when purchasing airline tickets. It is more convenient and possibly cheaper to purchase a ticket online than in person. Another factor to take in account is the question why would someone choose not to pay by card, what are you hiding? Cash can not be traced back to anyone and a drivers’ license number does not have to be on file at the airport, so it looks as if someone does not want to be traced back to the purchase of the ticket.

The second indicator from the list would be #8 passenger makes contradictory statements during questioning. When people contradict themselves in any form of questioning poses a red flag because it takes a lie to cover a lie and soon you will not remember the answers you gave in the first round of questioning. Another tale tell sign is poor eye contact and posture. You can tell a lot about a person from their posture (Cain & Gillett, 2018).

“With tightened security from September 11, 2001, it has become difficult for drug traffickers to use air cargo as a method for smuggling drugs into the United States” (Levinthal, 2012). People still try and as long as we remain vigilant we will continue to expose and sentence those who try to break the law.
