Conflict Management Term Paper Marking Scheme
Term Paper (worth 20% of Final Mark)
5-6 pages in length (double spaced, 12 pt font)
Due Date: Mar. 15, 2018
The term paper will have each student research a conflict situation. The conflict chosen can involve any area that you, the student, have been involved with personally or involves someone they know. Students can look at conflicts that have been in the news in Canada or elsewhere and can involve a police officer/security in the line of duty. Students will analyze the conflict and discuss how they might have handled the situation.
Students must research their conflict situation through an internet or library search and must properly document their source in accordance with APA school guidelines. Students can use recent occurrences or situations which may have occurred in the past. As well looking at other jurisdictions outside of Canada is acceptable.
The paper must include:
- A brief description of the occurrence
- The various conflict strategies/styles used
- The outcome of the conflict
- Current conflict theories that apply
- Your assessment of how you would handle the conflict using current theories to support your argument
- Conclusion
Make sure that you properly reference/cite your sources using APA style. Your essay must have a bibliography and in text citations. Students can use the current textbook and must use at least three other sources of material. Power points should not be used as original source material.
Evaluation: Your essay will be graded using the following criteria: the quality of your analysis; the structure of your essay (how well you develop a clear, coherent line of argument); direct references to and citation of materials. How well you apply conflict theories to the conflict incident. Problems with organization, logic and clarity, as well as errors in grammar, spelling and syntax will figure in the grading process. Your paper must also include a complete bibliography/reference list of all sources used as well as proper in text cites.
ALL PAPERS (HARD COPY) ARE DUE AT THE START OF CLASS MARCH 15, 2018. ANY PAPERS HANDED IN LATE (WITHOUT A VALID EXCUSE) WILL BE SUBJECT TO A REDUCTION IN MARK PENALTY IN ACCORDANCE WITH SCHOOL POLICY

- Any paper without a proper bibliography and/or in text citations APA style will receive a mark of zero.
- Any paper without proper APA style in text citations will receive a maximum mark of 50%.
- Problems with organization, logic and clarity, as well as errors in grammar, spelling and syntax will figure in the grading process with appropriate mark deductions.
- All papers (hard copy) are due at the start of class March 12, 2018. Any papers handed in late (without a valid excuse) will be subject to a reduction in mark penalty in accordance with school policy.
