Hello! My name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. You might know me already as Mark Twain. Thats my pen name. You can tell from my published books list that I enjoy writing. My life was quite exciting so I had good inspiration in setting up nice novels. Dont forget that I was a young man when the Civil War started. Two decades had passed since then. Now I want to tell you how to write a best-seller like my "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn":
1. Pick a catchy title for your book - In some towns and cities, Huckleberry means something small and unimportant - usually expressed ironically in mock self-deprecation. Make the reader curious just from the front cover. What kind of adventures could have a "huckleberry"?
2. Start telling the story as a first person narrator - Make your reader feel that you are actually talking to him. If you offer a third person perspective it might not be so catchy. A first person narrator makes the reader curious about your personality. How will you feel and act in different situations? Read and find out more about me!
3. Try to link it with your other novels or stories. If a new reader will enjoy this book, you will make him curious about your previous work. For example I started my book just like this: "You don’t know about me, without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but that ain’t no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. That is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary. Aunt Polly—Tom’s Aunt Polly, she is—and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before.". - As you can see, I take my role in serious! I am not Mark anymore. I am Huckleberry, a friend of Tom Sawyer.
3. Know the places you are writing about: Most of the action is on the Mississippi river and its nearby places. I can always imagine the river in a very detailed way. My advice for you is to pick a place you know the best. Imagine how nice it could be to take your readers to a tour in the house where one of the chapters of your book happened. The most simple way is to place the action in your home or favorite town.
